For many of our customers, the generator is fired up in the morning and doesn’t stop all day, except for refueling. You may even run yours all night at certain jobsites. One of the most important and relied-upon power systems you have, your generator needs and deserves frequent service and maintenance to avoid a breakdown.
Uninterruptible Power Supply Service
There are a wide range of UPS systems on the market for industrial and heavy-duty use. Due to the complex electronics involved in these systems, it takes highly skilled and factory-trained technicians to inspect, maintain and repair them. Since a UPS doesn’t necessarily kick on at regular intervals, frequent inspection and maintenance is critical to be confident it will provide power when you need it. We will propose the type and frequency necessary depending on the nature of your UPS.
Air Compressor Service
An air compressor generates huge amounts of heat when running. The combination of heat and pressure can fatigue the compressor, reservoir and lines of your compressed air system, resulting in failure. Our inspection and service makes sure you can count on your compressor at all times. Thanks to their advanced training, our power system technicians can service and maintain all types of compressors, including stationary and portable models.
Switchgear & Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) Service
Reliable switchgear not only affects your productivity, it also affects the safety of your crews, which is why we highly encourage you to take advantage of our switchgear and ATS preventive maintenance services.

Inspections for All Aspects of Your Power Systems
Full System Inspection
Most power systems include a variety of sub-systems designed to work together for reliable power supply. The engine in your power system includes multiple circuits for lubrication, fuel, cooling, starting and power transfer. Our trained technicians will inspect all of the individual components and sub-systems of your engine and verify that they work properly together.
Our power system full system inspection is performed on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual basis, depending on the nature, frequency of use and application of the power system. We’ll propose the frequency and detailed service best adapted to your equipment, as well as include an inspection of all monitors, safety controls and an associated transfer switch, if applicable.
Full Oil Service
The liquids in your power generation equipment all service a unique function:
- The oil in your power generation equipment is responsible for the lubrication of many moving parts.
- The coolant system is responsible for removing excess heat and keeps the equipment from overheating.
- The fuel delivers the power to run your equipment and creates the power you need.
Due to the frequent and demanding use most generators see, keeping on top of your oil, coolant and fuel system maintenance is critical to ensuring the reliability and dependability of your generator.
Coolant Filter Change Service
Changing coolant filters on a regular basis is critical for the performance and longevity of your engine. Failure to maintain a clean coolant system can result in overheating, blockage or corrosion. For the equipment in most power systems, coolant filters are changed on an annual basis. Contact us to understand a detailed list of our recommendations.
Most belts included in your power system equipment need to be inspected and replaced on a regular basis to avoid failure during use or at start-up. We inspect and change them to ensure a lower risk of equipment failure. This is part of our Preventive Maintenance (PM) approach, which gives you peace of mind and confidence in all your power system equipment.
Load Bank Test
Regular verification of the integrity of your power system electrical systems is necessary to ensure correct performance and responsiveness. This is done with a load test to 80% of the nominal rating for your machine (per the generator nameplate). Our technicians will use a resistive load bank to perform this test according to industry-standard procedures. The results of this test allow us to predict electrical system wear and perform preventative maintenance before your equipment fails. Loading your genset during this test also acts to clean out the combustion chamber, fuel injectors and exhaust system.
While battery maintenance is important for all machines, it is especially critical on equipment you don’t run every day, or equipment that may be stored for extended periods. Battery failure is the most common reason gensets won’t start. For optimal reliability, here at Empire AG we install top-quality batteries with the power and reputation your equipment deserves. In the case of our Caterpillar Premium High Output batteries, we suggest replacement every 3 years (reduced to 2 years for other makes of batteries).
The industry-standard test for generator winding is called Megger testing. When performed at regular intervals, it allows us to detect deterioration and degradation in the performance of your generator windings. Tracking this drop in performance helps us predict winding failure and plan for preventative maintenance, instead of waiting for your generator to fail in the field. The environment in which you use your generator (heat, frequency, dirt) has a dramatic effect on its life, which is why we take this use and application into consideration when proposing the frequency of our Megger test service.
Using pressurized water is the best way to remove accumulated dirt and grime from your power generation and storage equipment. When we pressure wash, we take precautions to keep water out of sensitive areas, such as electronics and wiring. Keeping your equipment clean has the added benefit of allowing easier inspection and detection of problems that you might not otherwise see when dirty.
Over time and with regular use, valves can drift from their original gaps and spacing. When we perform regular inspection and maintenance, we can keep your valves from leaking or sticking. Our expert technicians always consult the original manufacturer or client specifications and guidelines to restore your valve performance to optimal condition.
Fuel System Maintenance
Maintenance to fuel filtering systems is important due to the dirt and debris that can find their way into your fuel tank and fuel system. This is especially common if you fill your power generators with fuel from containers out in the field, where cleanliness is difficult to guarantee. Depending on the specifics of your equipment and fuel type, we will suggest the service that takes care of your specific requirements.
Additional Fluid Analysis
Depending on the type of fluids in your power systems and the environment and conditions in which they are used, we can also perform additional fluid analysis. This may include oil, coolant and/or fuel. We will suggest which fluids require analysis, detail the frequencies for you and explain the purpose and advantages of the fluid analysis. We’ll discuss how it relates to the reliability and longevity of your power system equipment.
Transfer Switch Inspection
Inspection and cleaning of your automatic transfer switches (ATS) is important to do regularly. Designed to actuate automatically, your ATS needs to be verified for accurate time delays, voltage drop across load contacts and reliable indicator lamp and LED function. Our trained technicians will also inspect for hot spots and buss bars connection issues that could mean service or replacement is necessary. Our ATS service covers these important points:
- We have an understanding of the complete electrical system structure from the input to the building, including the backup Generator, Switchgear, ATS, UPS including maintenance wraps and PDU or load distribution
- We follow NFPA Safety Standards
- We use the best tools and supplies, including insulated hand tools, Hepa Vacuums and recommended manufacture maintenance supplies
- We utilize a thermal-imaging unit, like a Fluke or Flir Thermal Imaging camera
- We use digital multi-meters and we maintain and calibrate all technician meters annually
We will determine which switchgear requires inspection for reliability, durability or safety reasons, and perform the necessary service or repair to keep it working properly. Regular testing of your switchgear can often allow us to detect problems and perform preventative maintenance before it fails.
